I have worked for The Port of London Authority as an apprentice for the last 2 years. I have been the only female afloat and this has been hard in many ways. I have felt that I always have something to prove.
I have struggled physically being a petite female I’m not as strong as my fellow crew members. This has resulted in my unfortunately not being able to move chain on deck for example. I have overcome this by using equipment around me to make the task easier. I gained a Crain ticket which helped me on deck complete certain tasks safely.
One of the ways I would recommend for making this industry more conducive for women is providing better sanitary facilities onboard vessels. It’s a small change that would make a big difference.
