Against The Tide

Michelle Oduro-Amoateng, Ghana – Engine Cadet

August 30, 2022

As an engine cadet, I assist the engineering officers with the routine maintenance of the machineries in the engine room and on deck. I also assist in the engine room watch keeping. I ensure that the machinery spaces are always clean and void of spillages and dirt.

What I love most about the I enjoy the challenges. They keep my brain thinking and active all the time. And I also love the fact that every day I get to learn something new.

I have not had any specific challenges so far because of my gender so I am embracing it and looking onto the positives.

Currently, the employment of women seafarers is at a minimal and it is something that should be a focus. Employers, including shipping companies and crewing agencies should be more engaged in this cause to help improve the situation of women seafarers. This is the change I want to see in the industry.

My advice to other female seafarers is to stay true to yourself, your goals and principles.  Do your best and be confident in whatever you do.
