I have never faced any challenge because of my gender because as I walk up the gangway to join the ship I transform from being “a woman” to a “seafarer”.

My day to day responsibilities as a Deck cadet Involves helping the OOW with his/her duties as to prepare me for being a better Officer one day. I learn a lot about navigating the ship, complying with a lot of regulations. One of the most important things I do onboard is to learn the deck work and that’s actually where I started before even going to the bridge. What I enjoy the most about my profession is the fact that I get to be hands-on. Everything I do onboard require me to mentally, emotionally and physically there. One of the things I like the most again is the fact that I get to work with different people and get to learn about different cultures and how they do things.

I have been in this industry for 5 years, 3 of which I was in school. I am currently a Deck Cadet.
