As a seafarer I have had an opportunity to meet different nationalities. I now know more about different cultures and mentalities. Working on a cruise ship also gives you the chance to explore different part of the world and to share some amazing experiences with other people.
I don’t like to say this, but unfortunately been “female” in this industry is a challenge. I faced the biggest challenge when I was a Deck Cadet. Once you finish the Nautical School you need to build your experience on board and sometimes you can meet people that are not interested to support and help Cadets. Unfortunately, I met this kind of people. Woman and girls continue to face obstacles in achieving equality. Today around the world, people are working together to dismantle barriers and I believe that one day we will be all considered the “same” in this industry.
I would like to change people’s minds and I know that it will happen but will take time. Probably if we had more women in Captain and Chief Engineer position it will help in promoting equality. The lack of woman in position of power on-board ships affects the equality agenda.
To my sea sisters starting this kind of job, like any other career you will find challenges. You feel as if you’ve stepped foot on another planet. My advice is to be always professional and to learn as much as you can.
Anna is currently a 3rd Officer.
